The argument is that the right is a stopped clock but, since those are right twice a day, the job of the left is to hang around for 12 hours, concede 'the clock is right', hang around for 12 hours ... Because: temporal integrity. 1/ https://twitter.com/opinion/status/1317474155265220609 …pic.twitter.com/kak0A3bwTB

A parody of the 'liberal can't take his own side of the argument' line. The fable of the shy, expert watchmaker who keeps being faced down by the sullen, stopped grandfather clock in the corner? That's the frozen limit. 2/

If your opponents really are reactionaries in the perversity-futility-jeopardy mode - if you believe Hirschman is right - all your responses to them must be made in awareness of that, and you should seek to telegraph that fact to the public. 3/

If you go out of your way to highlight every single occasion when the clock just happens to be right, in a consequential way - look, the clock is right! I need to leave for my appointment now! - you misleadingly signal that the clock is generally to be trusted. 4/

The 'power' of reactionary rhetoric does not consist in tending to be correct. Its power consists in tending to be persuasive. That's the challenge, then. Obviously you shouldn't do anything dumb, but try NOT to appear to be not doing the dumb thing for a dumb reason. 5/

Shifting metaphors, I honestly can't decide whether Sunstein's problem is that he's like an abused spouse or a bored chess master. An abused spouse is constantly making excuses. 'Yes, he did it because he's abusive - but maybe this time he was right! I did deserve it!' 6/

A bored chess master knows the game won't be fun unless he spots this woodpusher some pieces. 'Yes, we win the policy argument. But suppose - hypothetically! - that R's happened to be right about the minimum wage or the Green New Deal - could we STILL win the policy argument?' 7/
