I’d put it higher, 7 or 8, for “J R” at least. My favorite is “A Frolic of His Own,” which retains the unattributed dialogue gimmick but has way fewer characters, and is also funnier

My issue with Gaddis is less the difficulty (though I do find him unreasonably difficult) than the rather conventionally misanthropic worldview you discover when you dig through all the gimmicks; it’s what people complain about with modernism, but with Gaddis it’s actually true
