I don't need to know who needs to hear this but "history" (which is an academic discipline & mode of thought) can't prosecute anyone: goal of history is understanding not litigation. There are criminal & political systems for determining legal guilt & political transgressions

Of course liberal Protestantism and the left in America overlap in, crucially, the figure of Martin Luther King, who was a great one for insisting that, sooner or later, history would be revealed as being on the side of goodness and justice.

Nietzsche's aphorism - "nature, cynical in her sunrises" - always seemed to me a far truer assessment of history's moral indifference.

This makes me want to re-read "Use and Abuse of History."
IMO one of the reasons mil history is a genre out of step with academic hist is its implied moral calculus involves Honor-culture virtues out of step with liberalism--aggression, pride, agonistic competition, etc. - Show replies
