Not American-specific. Every village, town, and city in Canada built a cenotaph. I've wondered about the movement being it.

In WWI in Britain (but prob US/Canada too) regiments we’re formed locally & fought together with their mates from home - so sometimes whole villages were wiped out in single days. Devastating. Hence many local monuments. By WWII they’d learned to mix troops up.

It may have had something to do with the Depression, the New Deal and/or WPA projects . I know they did a lot of work with the arts.
