I don' think the kids today will be able to understand this, but as recently as 2008 Rudy Giuliani was the great hope of moderate Republicans -- the avatar of a modern GOP that was at ease with mainstream culture.

Maybe so, but those people are not 'moderate'. So I don't think they were part of any 'missing middle' or 'silent majority' that was up for grabs in this election.
