Real talk: I don't think the Coens quite knew what they were trying to achieve with O Brother, Where Art Thou? , but the music is so good and there are enough great moments that we tend to gloss over what a dogs breakfast it is

Whether it works depends on whether the connections the movie makes between disparate things resonates or not. YMMV.

With you on that. Thematically their best, most cohesive story.

Also: agree that Hail Caeser is deeply underrated

They were trying to make an entertaining movie and succeeded.
-
That's true of almost all their movies. Maybe not The Ladykillers.

Agree about Hail Caesar being deceptively shallow with hidden depth, but I thought Oh Brother was the opposite: they were shooting for depth and came up short.

Coen Bros argument? Lemme in. OK. I agree with the former - it's a bit sloppy but it's filled with so many great touches it masks its somewhat meandering plot. Hail Caesar is criminally underrated. A solidly-plotted classic comedy made in the screwball tradition. VERY diff films.

One beef with Hail Caesar is they should have blocked out more rehearsal time for actual dancer Channing Tatum to learn/perfect a truly killer showstopper routine.
