I don't really view what me or my peers are doing as much different than Rick's project and nothing he has written really contradicts the supposedly moralistic tone of more recent historical looks at the rightpic.twitter.com/Ej0VRDpzmQ

Second, the idea that conservatives are uniformly warm to Perlstein's work is not true, look at Geoffrey Kabservice's piece from a few years ago https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2018/09/09/liberals-dont-know-much-about-conservative-history-219742 …pic.twitter.com/awhcO2LUGt
John you are quite welcome to view your own project however you would like to view it. As for me, I'm hardly trying to suggest all conservatives like Perlstein. Douthat's review of Nixonland I discuss here was critical
I think the whole move of evaluating histories of conservatism over whether conservatives like them is flawed. Conservatives have historically liked histories that whitewashed and sanitized the past of their movement. See here for examples: https://newrepublic.com/article/151127/conservatives-know-much-conservative-history …
My point is that there ought to be a history of conservatism which neither anathematizes it tout court nor loses its capacity for judgment in an ocean of kitsch and thus permits itself to be made use of willy-nilly by conservatives
Moralistic history is bad but I think the historian's imperative toward empathy can sometimes lead to falsehood as well as truth -- can lead to excuse making and indulgence: "tout comprendre rend treès indulgent." I see this often in histories of the right.
