I dunno. My sense was always that people thought Biden can definitely win primary and general but that he would pursue a restoration of the status quo ante which would not grapple the challenges of the moment.

I'm not sure I understand the Q? I think a lot of left-wing people really believed (or believe) that Clinton lost where she did largely because of her policies and political alliances, and that Biden would similarly lose (and/or lose from mental/physical decline)
