But the Times has a policy of discouraging direct criticism -- which is why Krugman and Brooks only ever subtweet each other. It's a bad policy (internal dispute would be better) but it's how Times does it. So Stephens column seems a break from norms.

It's widely known that NYT staffers have gotten warnings about publicly criticizing Stephens/his work. So, unsurprising that some would see Stephens getting the greenlight to attack his own colleagues' work as odd/inappropriate in that context
