      Jeet Heer Retweeted Andrew Sullivan

In 1964 Richard Hofstadter thought that the GOP's rightwing fever would break after Goldwater's trouncing. Subsequent Democrats hoped for moderation of GOP after Watergate, Iran/Contra, 1992 loss, 2008 loss and 2012 loss. It's a fantasy that refuses to die.https://twitter.com/sullydish/status/1314611108381110274 …

      Andrew Sullivan @sullydish
"A Biden landslide is the only thing that can possibly, finally break the fever that has destroyed the GOP as a legitimate right-of-center political party, and turned it into a paranoid, media-driven, fact-free festival of fear and animus." https://andrewsullivan.substack.com/p/dreaming-of-a-landslide?token=eyJ1c2VyX2lkIjoyMzE3OTgzLCJwb3N0X2lkIjo3Nzk1MDUyLCJfIjoiN3IwbVoiLCJpYXQiOjE2MDIyNjIzODYsImV4cCI6MTYwMjI2NTk4NiwiaXNzIjoicHViLTYxMzcxIiwic3ViIjoicG9zdC1yZWFjdGlvbiJ9.OKc2cjlbL4kYUkXz0SpVsoVi8cUOLbzO8R5k2zlHN3I …

The only time a major party moves away from any of its core principles is when it loses power for an extended period of time and then wins by doing so: Ike in 1952 and Clinton in 1992 (less so - but then Dems had kept the House)

Right - the best hope for GOP moderating is 3 or 4 presidential election losses in a row and being shut out of House/Senate for an extended period. There is no substitute for politics.

We would also need Democrats to wield power and they have seemingly no interest in doing so.

But maybe—just maybe—outside of the hard GOP base most Americans are just exhausted by the continual (and now literal) fever pitch of politics and would accept a Biden with relief. Or am I being naive?

Not sure that bodes well since it means under Biden liberals and moderates will demobilize (go to brunch!) while hard core GOP will get more extreme (I suspect QAon will become a bigger part of GOP mythos).

I have hight hopes this MAY be just what happens, much like the GOP shut out Dems (at least in the WH) from 1980-92. GOP will have one popular vote ONCE since 1988, and that streak isnt ending anytime soon.

Actually, that won't work either. Republicans know all they have to do it win 1 election, and they can end democracy altogether.

Isn't the only feasible path here for Dems to consolidate power once they have it? Court packing and aggressively adding states and then passing new voter protections and dismantling systemic racism, maybe even creating easier paths to citizenship?

Texas/Arizona turning a bluish shade of purple in 2-6 years could do just that.

THIS IS the best answer. Reject them at the polls for several election cycles.
