One dynamic people don't understand is that the fact that Democrats now occupy the space that used to be taken by Eisenhower/Rockefeller/George Romney etc. means that Republicans politicians need to consolidate & stir up the right-wing base even more to be politically viable.

Indeed, one of the things that was always gobsmacking about the right's overheated rhetoric about Obama was that they were calling a man whose policies were essentially Nixonian a "socialist".

As in Goldwater and the GOP, depends on the issue. Obama and Harris are no Eisenhower Republicans in, ahem, race, abortion, or rights for LGBTQs, or healthcare or welfare for that matter.

Eisenhower Republicans were no more conservative than Truman Democrats on sexual issues -- indeed, maybe more liberal (as Dems has more evangelicals and Catholics). Pretty common back then for Eisenhower types to contribute to Planned Parenthood.
