Goldwater rejected the religious right in the 70s and 80s, but to the extent that such a group existed in the 60s (say Bill James Hargess or even Billy Graham) I don't think he did so.

Democrats also embraced Billy Graham. If I recall correctly, every president from Truman to Obama met with him.

Nixon 1968 certainly was way more moderate than Goldwater, so not the best example. GW Bush was more moderate than Dole (who wanted to abolish Dept of Ed & opposed affirmative action), so it's not this simple.
