In 1964 Richard Hofstadter thought that the GOP's rightwing fever would break after Goldwater's trouncing. Subsequent Democrats hoped for moderation of GOP after Watergate, Iran/Contra, 1992 loss, 2008 loss and 2012 loss. It's a fantasy that refuses to die.https://twitter.com/sullydish/status/1314611108381110274 …

One might add that what when I was young (in the late Cenozoic) we would have called moderate Republicans are now a substantial part of the Democratic Party --- as in, ahem, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
-
Exactly. As Obama is alleged to have said, the Democrats are the Eisenhower Republicans now.

Sullivan, of ALL people, yearns for a moderate GOP? The same a-hole who called Iraq war protesters a "fifth column"?
-
Yes, he swings from his own extremes. Sometimes fascists have good ideas, to why is everyone so horrible to the point they are making me sympathetic to fascists, why not give me ”moderate conservatism” in a way I get everything I desire plus I remain eternally triumphant for it

Because the core of GOP is the marriage of broadly unpopular social policy with wildly unpopular economic policy, the fever can never break. What would a Conservative party intent on winning a majority of voters even stand for? It’d be a totally new party.
-
No, it'd just be the Democrats.

What might work, though, is a Dem commitment to restoring majority rule. White nationalism only succeeds because of the counter majoritarian elements of our system.

It's hard for a party that has only 30-35% support to hold, let alone maintain, national power, even with the anti-democratic mechanisms we have in place. If a Biden administration successfully bypasses the GOP, we could see a period of liberal ascendancy not unlike 1932-1968.
