Rather than dreaming about some mythical return of moderate Republicans, liberals would be better off understanding that a bid chunk of America (say 30-35%) are revanchist right & another big chunk is willing to ally with revanchist right. That's the permanent reality.

On state level - Maryland, Mss and Vermont they had some success. But on national level yes the strategy of appealing to base has worked well from Reagan to Bush to Trump.

In my memory (I’m 40-something) they have always been the home to bigotry and anti-intellectualism. They just keep marching down that path. I kinda doubt they would ever fully ban abortion because then 1-issue voters might move on.
