Knopfler was dragged all over for this at the time. He committed the sin of not editing the remarks of a real-life person from whom he basically stole the lyrics by actually taking notes on paper as the guy ranted. Want to drag him? Better crucify Randy Newman first then eh?

It wasn't a 'persona' created for the song -- at least, not if he's to be believed. Knopfler said the song was taken from actual comments he overheard, I believe at some big box electronics store. More in the vein of an impression of an actual person, not a fictional persona.
