3. During his short life, Hofstadter had two distinct phases: a radical period in 1930s & 1940s followed by a centrist (verging on conservative) period in 1950s & 1960s (with the beginnings of a third, more radical phase cut short by his death)

Serious answer: as per Gramsci, elites need plausible ideologies to help sell their self-interested & complacent policies (including sell those policies to themselves). RH's anti-populism has been very influential ideological rational, a pillar of hegemony.

My objection is that Jeet treats H. as a pundit, almost political activist, and not a historian. And, to be fair, H. was an influence beyond the campus. But Jeet treats H. more as like himself and not a historian responding to events and his reading of history.
