That's because Trump in 2016 didn't expect to win and was saying whatever he thought would aid him most to make money founding Trump TV or whatever after the election. What we see now is the real man.

Edsall and Bouie have made similar points in the past - the core of Trump's base are the prosperous small business owners, such as of restaurants or car dealerships, not necessarily w/ a 4-year college degree, yet they still feel disrespected and therefore are full of resentment.
