2. The other thing Trump was trying to do was splinter the Democratic coalition. His understanding of politics is that you win by uniting your party & dividing your rivals, which he did in 2016. 3. I don't think Trump achieved either goal (of discouraging Dems & splintering them) because his own need to keep his base united gave his opponents plenty of reason to vote & stay united. No. I think he tried, and failed, to rattle Biden into a gaffe. Trump does not seem to think ahead.
