Yes, after I wrote it, I read Sonny Bunch's review where he says the same as you. In the book I recall it as more convincing that he loves her, but Huston and Astor focus more on Brigid's lying, so I see why ppl say that it. Bogart plays him pretty torn up about it, tho.
