Thanks to @nataliapetrzela for tagging me. I've been quiet recently, in this forum, on my anti-intellectualism work. The pandemic and job reverberations paused all my research & writing. I'm working to ramp back up. On this, a key feature of conspiratorial thinking, ... /1 #USIHhttps://twitter.com/nataliapetrzela/status/1308713297928167425 …

...pseudoscience, off-beat think tanks, and advanced forms of pseudo/anti-intellectual thought is *mimesis*. With visualizations like this and "research"---as well as conferences, publications, journals, & books---the conspirators and pseudo-intellectuals mimic scholarship. /2

A key feature of anti-intellectualism and agnotology, as relayed by Hofstadter, Jacoby, Gordin, Proctor, Oreskes & Conway, etc., is a resistance to enlightenment values while simultaneously operating within a fun house framework of science, empiricism, evidence, research, etc. /3

Given those elements, I'm not surprised to see this form of data visualization. All political/empirical reasoning demands some kind of evidential premises. When the facts don't align with your desired political/social outcome, then you manufacture the fit with new data. /4 & fin

That's partly what's at work here but also what we call anti-intellectualism is itself a child of the Enlightenment, sharing the same underlying premises as more respectable Enlightenment thought (i.e. the causal workings of history are explicable). It's para-intellectualism

Popular liberalism often makes the mistake of thinking of conspiracy theories as a throwback to Middle Ages when in fact they bear all the hall marks of modernity.

Well, the popular liberals who look at these see, in part, what the conspiratorial mindset wants them to see---history, in a word. That these "happenings" have a history that certifies their train of thought. The train originated further back than you think, ergo legitimacy.

Clarification: Of course I don't believe the histories that these folks construct! I just wanted to relay that they *need* some kind of vaguely plausible history to help construct their alternate reality. It's part of their evidential tool belt.
