One thing to bear in mind is that the anger was not just that Bork was scuttled but that he was replaced by Kennedy, who turned out to be soft on key social issues (abortion, LGBT rights). This is what the right sees as the great betrayal.https://twitter.com/daveweigel/status/1308027968191565830 …

Conservatives have been angry and organized for 33 years over the Bork fight, which ended with a Republican president getting a different justice confirmed. Perfectly easy to imagine that the twin blows of Garland/Ginsburg do the same thing for the left.

The other thing to remember about Bork is that after his disastrous hearings, he lost support from many ordinary conservatives (although not conservative movement) for his brutal argument that companies had the right to tell female employees they should be sterilized or lose job

It's been completely whitewashed from history but Bork's pro-sterilization position turned some conservatives against him and explains why six Republican Senators voted against him.

Frankly Borks preference for legislative actions over the rights based dialogue of many legal debates would put him very much at odds with more libertarian Federalist type judges that would emerge over the next 25 years

He was an extremist. Maybe some utility as a legal academic, bit did not belong anywhere near the SC. Also, he is also almost singlehandedly responsible for the sorry state of anti-trust enforcement.

The names of the Republican Senators that voted against him all belong to the now extinct species call "Republican Moderates or liberals:" Chaffee, Packwood, Stafford, Specter, & Warner. The closes any current Republican comes to this group is Murkowski.

Frankly his participation in the Saturday Night Massacre should have been absolutely disqualifying all by itself. It's insane that the GOP somehow managed to re-write history and paint him as a martyr of partisan obstructionism, with no apparent pushback from the left.
