3. I think this time the situation is more fluid than before. There's only 6 weeks till the election, this isn't replacing a GOP seat (i.e. Scalia and Kennedy) but a Dem one, and there's some genuine reasons for some in GOP to be careful.

4. There are a couple of wild cards, one of which is that Trump might nominate Judge Amy Coney Barrett -- he kind of owes the Christian right and it makes sense for him to nominate a woman. But Barrett would also really throw the whole abortion issue front and center.

5. If it's Barrett then there's no plausible deniability. A vote for her would be a vote to end Roe. The election would be about Roe. It's a real gamble. But if he doesn't pick Barrett, there's risk of alienating some powerful allies. The situation is fluid.
