I disagree with the sentence itself, but it's undeniable that fears of slave revolts (and Indian attacks) played a role in binding the colonists together throughout the war (see The Common Cause by Robert Parkinson).

So slavery wasn't the main cause of the Revolution, but it certainly was ever-present in the minds of its participants.
