My theory is that people feel latent guilt over the racism, cruelty, misogyny, etc., that modern Republicanism/Trumpism entails. They need an altruistic fantasy to justify it.

I see less Symbol & more rote displacement from Trump wrongdoing & the suspicion of more to be discovered of it onto scapegoats: a simple mirroring. With none of the penumbra of meaning that accumulates around symbol. Caveat: broadening into symbol may be a cognitive option.
