Yes, but excess death must be measured in relative terms. If, for example, x people died in 1900 when US pop. was 76 million and three times that number died this year with a pop. of 330 million, the deathrate is lower in 2020 not higher. Right?

In terms of excess death, if we average out American deaths during World War 2, over a 4 month period, roughly 34,000 soldiers were killed and the US population then was about 132 Mil (a little less than 1/3). Scaled up to today’s pop, WW2=approx 102K dead, C19=190K and counting.
