The great exception to this rule is William F. Buckley, who God knows had his faults but also had the gift for friendship. His memoirs aren't spiteful but, on the contrary, suffer from the complacency of untroubled happiness.

MMMM. No. His trajectory from Brooklyn to literary success was widely shared by his cohort (see Howe, Kazin, etc). He was mocked because he treated what was a commonplace story as a great achievement & published a book on his own greatness at age 37.
