Let's be clear. The draft in the Vietnam war presented a generation with a horrible set of choices. The proper ethical choices in order were 1. Jail as draft defier 2. Fleeing country. 3. Serving. The least ethical choice was the one Trump picked: gaming system to avoid draft

How does that make sense? There's nothing heroic or laudable about going to jail. I hate trump as much as anyone, but I don't get this.

Civilian service as a conscientious objector was also, at least for Quakers and some others who could document it, an OK option.

That right was only won for non-religious objectors by people going to jail and appealing their conviction.

          1) I've spent years examining and re-examining my motives and my ethical thinking. I think, actually, there were only two ethical choices: defy the draft and accept jail time, or serve because it was your citizen's obligation to accept the draft and serve in the military.

          2) I can't do it over again. I found ways to avoid being drafted, and I helped others escape it, but, retrospectively, I think we collectively helped undermine what it means to be a citizen. I regret those choices now.
