Is the trouble with meritocracy the notion of advancement by merit itself or the fact that we don't have that? We still get by on connection and patronage, we just pretend it's merit. Pretty sure I’d be able to find agreement with this with some exceptions.

Obviously there are places where meritocracy works very well -- chiefly in competitions that have clear metrics (sports). But as an ideal for a whole society?
