To underscore the point: if social policy were guided by what's best for everyone, there would be a massive investment in making grade school education safe & allowing colleges to be remote. The economic priorities & essentially privatized response to pandemic means opposite.

Colleges are flush with cash from high tuition and grade schools are chronically underfunded due to austerity culture.
-
They’re not flush w/ cash. A lot of universities and colleges are very dependent on on-campus/auxiliary services for survival. And a lot of students have been sold college as lifestyle and won’t pay high tuition for an online experience. Lib arts colleges are barely hanging on.

The PK-12 I teach at has opened PK-5 and is remote for now for 6-12. This isn't about the soc sci consensus, but rather parents would likely pull their kids who are too young to stay home alone rather than pay tuition, and the school would be at serious financial risk.

I have a sample size of two: third grade and eighth grade. 8th grader much much much more equipped for distance learning. 3rd grader doing okay but his eyes are bleeding and he needs to run. Put kinders back first!! I can't even imagine.
