This piece reads like a total confirmation of everything Trump has said about the riots, or the supposed 'uprising.'. To call it & its author beneath contempt does an injustice to the concept of contempt. Right, so it seems such books are aimed at tempering police response to riots
-
America has far and away the harshest carceral regime of any democracy in the world, so such books are not having an impact.

The author is reprehensible? "Rioting & looting" is how authorities label ANYTHING that radically challenges their authority. When the state systematically abolishes (& stigmatizes) every "peaceful" avenue for redress of grievances, shit happens. Stop blaming the victims.

There is a traditional alternative to "rioting, looting and burning" -- the general strike. If you're against BOTH looting AND striking, you're an oppressor.

I never said, and don't think for a second that many looters listen to NPR. What I said was that people like the woman who was interviewed are a) contemptible and b) say things that seem to confirm what Trump says about the looters.

This reminds me of a similar dubious argument made in an online literary zine (I forget which) that argued people should cheat in video games as a form of rebellion against the rules imposed by the game creator, as a metaphor for society, etc. Which is not why most gamers cheat.

Finally found it! (Just to let you know I wasn't making this up.) http://thefanzine.com/cheating-video-games-moral-imperative/ …
