A Dune query: the novel was originally serialized in Analog, whose then-editor John W. Campbell was notorious for his fetish for stories about esp & genetic Übermenschen. But I'm not clear if Frank Herbert was trying to cater to Campbell's preferences or subtly parody them?

Campbell hated the sequel (serialized in Galaxy, not Analog, tellingly). And series didn't return to Analog till after Campbell's death. So maybe Campbell caught on?

Sure. Once Herbert made the subtext more explicit work was clearly outside Analog's boundaries. Would be interesting to go back to the serialized version that ran in Analog to see if it had some of the foreshadowing of the darker stuff that is in the book version.
