A Dune query: the novel was originally serialized in Analog, whose then-editor John W. Campbell was notorious for his fetish for stories about esp & genetic Übermenschen. But I'm not clear if Frank Herbert was trying to cater to Campbell's preferences or subtly parody them?

It’s pretty clearly the latter the best evidence of which is Campbell’s strong dislike and rejection of the sequel (which puts the lie to the ubermensch fantasy)

Neither. No reason to think Herbert cared about Campbell, he was following his own muse.
