Let's say I told you last August, "In a year, 170,000 Americans will be dead from a pandemic, unemployment will be 10.2%, and schools will be inoperable in much of the country" - then asked, "what will Trump's approval rating be?" Would you have said, "higher than it is now"?pic.twitter.com/yCc4vHKYyy

Well, the surprise is that Trump's approval hasn't gone up more. Most pandemic stricken countries have seen leaders leap into 60-70% range.

Most world leaders contained the virus reasonably well. Even the ones who fucked it up managed to at least look like they give a damn if their people live or die.

Right. So the argument is that Trump IS experiencing consequences in his approval rating.

that is the best counter-argument, that he's been propped up by rally around the flag. But I don't quite buy it. That effect is usually temporary in the poli-sci lit, and other leaders who've mishandled this less egregiously have seen polling slideshttps://www.timesofisrael.com/as-coronavirus-outbreak-balloons-netanyahus-approval-rating-slides/ …

Trump went on television multiple times and *declared* that he wanted to restrict access to testing because he cared more about making the case count look good than providing public health officials with accurate information about the pandemic! He told people to inject bleach!

Correct me if I am wrong but that would be due to that thing called "leadership"?

A majority of white America would still re-elect him. That is at once perverse, yet depressingly predictable.

To be fair, they did more than just let people die and say “It is what it is.”

But those leaders haven't overseen a never ending festival of death. Those other countries may have had a month or so where the pandemic raged horribly, but then they've all seen it settle down to very low levels, where life has gone back nearly to normal
