There's a massive difference between rhetoric not resonating with people and it being 'beyond their ken'.
Is there? The point is that it is allegedly elite university rhetoric so is somehow something that is outside the range of people who haven't attended elite universities.
He shouldn't have used the term elitism. The point should be that jargon turns people off + alienates (regardless of education or wealth). Parts of the left definitely have a jargon problem and it would be strategically wise to reflect on it.
Apparently Chait is insulated from encountering many Puerto Ricans, who as colonized people know much more about colonialism than college grads. Yet another example of a liberal trying to be a populist and looking like a fool.
I don't know about alienating, but it does seem like 'colonialism" as a term and concept mostly speaks to college folk. Like, I bet the people who have the strongest reactions to the term are mostly college graduates.
