“If Trump wins a second term — especially if that victory relies on another rural surge to overcome massive opposition across the big metros — the chaos in Portland may look like only the preliminary skirmish for an even more incendiary collision to come.” https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2020/07/trumps-portland-offensive-fits-long-pattern/614476/ …

I agree, though I think the chaos is coming anyway. Something has broken in this country. It may not be Helter Skelter but it is Humpty Dumbty time. Get out if you can.

The country was fracturing before Covid but the mishandling of the pandemic has really accelerated process. Covid failure broke the social contract. It's hard to see how it gets fixed.

It won't be fixed for the foreseeable future. The question is whether any kind of modus vivendi, however tentative and contingent, in the interim.

The US was a failed state long before the pandemic. What has always been evident to foreigners is now becoming so also for US citizens, who have lived decades in denial and in projection of their flaws towards other foreign states. Only a childish nation thinks it is exceptional.

Yes, I agree completely (and have been saying as much for a very long time now - above all about the USA not being a full democracy).
