A lot of confusion here comes from people jumping from "X is socially constructed" to "x isn't real." But socially constructed things are experienced as real because society shapes our lives. Money is socially constructed but not having money leads to real material deprivationhttps://twitter.com/jbouie/status/1293563116941344769 …

And in all of this time of shouting "the categories aren't real", you aren't actually dealing with my claim, which isn't "race is biologically real" but that "racial hierarchy is a real part of our society and that is what shapes racial identification."

My response to this is always "Marriage is socially constructed."

I wonder why this point is so hard to grasp? It feels like a very early 2000s, Science War-debate to have.

Exactly! Identifying something as a social construct is meant to differentiate it from an immutable law of the universe in that something socially constructed can be changed by altering societal norms, values, understandings, etc.

artificial things are real, they just aren’t natural. Tables, chairs, etc.

This is why people keep wanting to bring back the gold standard — because it feels "real" to them.

The choice of traffic lights are socially constructed, it doesn’t mean you can drive through red lights.
