2. The figure of the lascivious clergyman is as old as religion. Baker and Swaggart were creeps but they existed in a moral universe where it was still expected that they should hide their sins and feign remorse. We're in a different time now.

3. What's striking about Falwell Jr. is how utterly lacking in shame he is. Not only did he not hide his indiscretions, he flaunted them. Reportedly, he'd boast about his sex life and large dick to his colleagues & show them risque photos of his wife

I see the difference today is that the media has changed. Jr's mistakes may make for an interesting segment on 60 minutes or the evening news but that's it. However, that image of him will live online forever, independent of any major media outlets being shared on and on.

They cover for one another now. In Swaggart's case, it was another evangelical preacher, Marvin Gorman, who got a tip that Swaggart was at a no-tell motel right down Airline Hwy from Gorman's church. He went down, took the air out of one of Swaggart's tires, and called the press.
