      1. Trump won on racist nostalgia ("Make America Great Again") & dissatisfaction with the status quo. His problem is in running for re-election is that he's the now the status quo & his disastrous response to pandemic makes many nostalgic for the older order he disrupted.

      2. George Will articulated this well in a recent column where he spoke of Biden as satisfying a hunger for a normal president. With the example of Trump's chaos presidency unfolding, Biden is making a credible pitch to a broad swath of voters who just want a non-freak president

      3. A return to normality is a strong pitch. The more interesting problem will be how Biden will be able to satisfy those yearnings as president, since the scale of problems USA is facing preclude any return to normal. Semantically, then, would you settle for a return to sanity? No word ‘attack’ re Beirut? Boring, but Presidential, tweets? Precedented stuff?

"return to normalcy" == going back to not saying the quiet parts out loud. Quietly deport, drone bomb, and transfer wealth from the poor to the rich. We have so much work to do.

I'm not going to suggest anyone will 'miss' Trump, but I think there might be a moment where the ruling political class will realize that having such a loud scapegoat for the nation's collapse might have been more handy than it appeared.

Once Trump leaves, the illusion that all could be well once again will vaporize, and what we'll be left with is a doddering puppet king that you CAN'T single handedly blame for the end of the American Empire.

Biden has addressed this, said it would be a tough road to hoe. I can't understand why he wants this job, to be honest.

This is a fine, acute esssy. But Biden and Deems have to eliminate as many impediments from our sclerotic governing structure as possible, too. Otherwise, he and his colleagues will be unable to fully use the federal government as the powerful tool of large reform it must be.
