I'm thinking of reading some novels by Harvey Swados, Richard Hofstadter's brother-in-law, because I think they might shed some light on Hofstadter himself. What's wrong with me?

Hard to say, but if you're interested in fixing it, I would suggest (re-)reading "Anti-Intellectualism in American Life" which, despite its fascinating subject, is rambling and boring enough to sate any interest in Hofstadter for a fairly long period of time

Recently read Anti-Inintellectualism and agree -- it's way too long and unfocused.
