Looking for tidbits about actor Kevin McCarthy is the only reason I'd ever read anything by Mary McCarthy.

Hard to say, but if you're interested in fixing it, I would suggest (re-)reading "Anti-Intellectualism in American Life" which, despite its fascinating subject, is rambling and boring enough to sate any interest in Hofstadter for a fairly long period of time

Jeet, your friends and loved ones have gathered here today to tell you that we think you have a problem. A Hofstadter problem.

I can quit reading Hofstadter anytime I want.

Arthur Conan Doyle's brothera-in-law, E.W. Hornung, wrote a series of novels about Raffles, a gentleman thief who always outsmarted the detective. I always thought Christmas dinner at that house would be rather strained.https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/364 …

Love that! Maybe you have read it, but if not, David S. Brown’s biography of Hofstadter is very good:https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/R/bo3680376.html …

No. As much as I like Hofstadter, the most distinguished historian was C. Vann Woodward. Primary research was better. Perry Miller might even squeeze out Hofstadter.

Seems like a good step toward very complete research. I heard him give the Jefferson lecture at Berkeley in1966, and thought that he hadn't given himself entirely to the exceptional American project.
