And of course, employing scientists & public health officials to study & prevent emerging diseases would have spillover benefits. Plus, the money made by them would be spent and circulate in the economy, creating demand. There's no good reason not to do this. Pure myopia.

Considering the lives lost and the trillions of dollars in economic damages that the pandemic has caused, a couple extra billion put into new public health measures is definitely a worthwhile investment.

One problem with reporting on big $ amounts is that basically anything over $10 million registers to most people as "wow that's a lot of money" even if it's couch cushion change on a Federal scale.

I think contextualizing big money as a percentage of a specific budget helps most of us understand quite well.
