Strangely, a lot of idiotic commentary on workplaces is driven by people who have no clue how they normally work, because they've only ever worked in cosseted institutions like academia, where nobody is accountable and political gangsterism is the most viable career path.

This doesn't seem to me to be limited to journalism... But I wonder if it's actually caused by poor job prospects, or our increasing need for immediate gratification. It seems to me that many can not deal with the timescales involved in developing a career.
