The thing to understand is that the radical right (the people Trump is trying to stoke up) hate their fellow citizens far more than any foreign adversary. So Trump's move makes sense.https://twitter.com/therealjimteal/status/1286094032934928385 …

People turned on by this behavior are maga all the way. He's not winning over new voters with the fascism.

He’s not trying to win over voters any more. This is purely about creating chaos and either suppressing voters or finding a way to delay the election. Everything he has done with regard to Covid has been with re-election in mind and this is the same

They've had an (at least!) 50 year long non-stop political advertising campaign intended to get them to loath anyone living in a major city.

Tangentially related: The list of things people blame for HRC's loss in 2016 includes misogyny, Russian interference, not campaigning in Wisconsin, James Comey, etc, etc, etc.

I just don’t see how this can have a positive effect with non-base voters though.

But if democratic leaning urban areas are so fearful that voter turnout drops...... I wouldn’t be surprised if these federal forces end up deployed to “enhance election security” or “fight electoral fraud”.

Yup. They're considered anti-American or not part of the "real America", which will bring down or destroy the US. So it's easy for them to be fine with and cheer on their persecution.

It's all about power. The intensity of terror rises in proportion to proximity to the throne.

Absolutely. Given a choice between a candidate clearly compromised by the the nation's greatest foreign adversary in the last 50 years or a largely middle of the road Democrat, they chose Russia's candidate. And would make that choice every time and forever.
