I’d be interested in hearing the journalistic argument for papers maintaining such large op-ed staffs/budgets at a time when so many local reporters have disappeared /there are tons of outlets publishing takes, as opposed to reinvesting those resources into reported journalism

Not totally sure I agree. At that scale, reporting tends to sell papers. But only at that scale.

If anything, the need for more reporting in small papers is far greater than it is at the large ones, which tend to overlap with lots of other news sources. Smalltown local reporting is in very short supply, and readers abandoning hollowed-out small papers in drove reflect that.

I pay for a few newspaper subscriptions. The last one I'd consider dropping is the one for my local paper. Can't get the same depth of coverage on my city from broadcast media.
