this whole silly debate is sort of a microcosm of the main fallacy of neoliberalism. there *can be no* freedom of speech without regulation of some kind, because otherwise ruthless bad actors will take over and substitute their own de facto rules

There is a tipping point I think, where the hurdles get so high that it becomes naturally easier to simply become friends with the totalitarians than to actually subject yourself to the rules.

Or, on the flip side, that these high restrictions breed a certain type of person that thrives under such conditions, in academia as well as journalism, business, policing, who in the end is not the sort of person you want having any kind of power.
