I think the Rushdie Affair had a profound effect on him, as did 9/11. As emotional as analytical. I also wonder if simply becoming an American citizen didn't also change him.

I don't think "forgetting" is a helpful way to understand political evolution in others away from positions we ourselves might fold. You don't forget political positions the way you forget high school romances.

What happens is that the logic of principles you do hold or politics that you are engaged in leads you to a point where other principles or others forms of political practice can no longer be sustained. It is a choice to change direction.
