Are you suggesting that there was significant Southern white popular resistance to Jim Crow laws? That Jim Crow passed DESPITE Southern white people largely being against it?

There doesn't have to be significant popular resistance (although C. Vann Woodward & others have found some). If the racism was run by elite class & shared by all classes of white society, then it can't be called populist.

No, I think liberals have absurdly and cynically stretched the definition of populism to include all sorts of disparate people (ranging from Sanders to Morales to Putin). I have a long article coming out about this.

In every democratic or quasi-democratic polity, successful politicians will claim to speak for the people (you don't win elections claiming to speak for the elite). So if it is just a "tactic" it is a meaningless term since that's what everyone does.

It's not merely a tactic signaling that someone speaks 4 the people. Populism is inherently divisive, often nativistic. Obama is basically an anti-populist in his political approach-A "unifier." Trump, in contrast, engages in a rhetoric of rage that pits groups against each other

Obama famously said there are no red states or blue states, only the United States. I bought a magazine in ‘08 claiming he would be the purple President. Trump is the exact opposite of that to such an extent, he thought about divesting the US of Puerto Rico.

I think the disconnect is Jeet saw Bernie as a populist, rightly or wrong, and therefore wants to give it a warm and fuzzier definition. A guy who speaks to passionate crowds or some such.

No, I've always been pro-populist, at least since reading Kazin's Populist Persuasion in 1990s. And I'm horrified by how liberals like Mounk use anti-populism to justify the coup in Bolivia (leading, by the way, to an anti-indigenous & religiously authoritarian government).

Jeet, before you write that article, I’d suggest reading this book if you haven’t already. Populism isn’t just being “for the people”, it involves declaring a subset of the people as the Real People and those outside that subset as an Other to be defeated.https://www.amazon.com/What-Populism-Jan-Werner-Müller/dp/0812248988 …

And that Othering generally involves race, religion or class, depending on the sort of populism. But it certainly isn’t just someone saying they are for the people not the powerful.

I find it confusing that Sanders was brought into this discussion while Warren was left out. Surely her campaign was similarly (if not as thoroughly) “populist” as Sanders’? People wrote a ton about Warren’s populism as the primary was happening!

A central issue for both Bernie and Trump in 2016 was ending trade agreements. In 2020, Warren put out a plan even more protectionist than Trump’s current policies. What exactly are you laughing at?

It's interesting that you continue to cite Kazin as foundational in your thinking, given Kazin acknowledges right-wing populism in American history and also situates Trump as a modern populist w/in this history. https://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/united-states/2016-10-06/trump-and-american-populism …pic.twitter.com/hV3rLHwYp3

It would of course be fine to disagree w/ Kazin (as I said, many disagree about the precise definitions of populism!), but it's odd to continue to name drop him as supporting your view when his own work on the phenomena involves a more complex understanding than you've offered.

You’re arguing “you’ve always been pro-populist” but have done nothing to define what you deem populist. As such you’re leaving readers guessing at your argument other than it’s dismissive nature. I’m left to think you see it like pornography, ‘you know it when you see it.’
