I think the problem is to refute your review would require you reading some books: Michael Kazin's The Populist Persuasion, John Judis' The Populist Explosion for a start. I'd also add that the main racists in American history have been anti-populist elitists.

You're just demonstrating you don't understand how to engage in scholarly dialogue w/ all of this. You're cherry-picking literature that conforms to your beliefs. Also, it's false that the "main racists in American history" have been anti-populist elitists.

The systems of slavery and Jim Crow were not set up by populists but rather by people who were squarely in the elite consensus of liberalism & conservatism (from Locke to Woodrow Wilson).

Are you suggesting that there was significant Southern white popular resistance to Jim Crow laws? That Jim Crow passed DESPITE Southern white people largely being against it?

There doesn't have to be significant popular resistance (although C. Vann Woodward & others have found some). If the racism was run by elite class & shared by all classes of white society, then it can't be called populist.

No, I think liberals have absurdly and cynically stretched the definition of populism to include all sorts of disparate people (ranging from Sanders to Morales to Putin). I have a long article coming out about this.

In every democratic or quasi-democratic polity, successful politicians will claim to speak for the people (you don't win elections claiming to speak for the elite). So if it is just a "tactic" it is a meaningless term since that's what everyone does.

@majorityfm Did an interview with a professor at The New School Federico Finchelstein talking about Fascism in which the interview also goes into detail about what he considers to be "Populism". It was a very good interview.https://youtu.be/4qI99Q8lH5k

There is a difference between speaking for “the people” writ large and claiming to speak for a special group of forgotten people, a silent majority in Republican terms, while fighting against another subset of people, the elite. The essence of populism is making that distinction.

If Jeet's thing is that "Bernie was a populism ergo populism good" (contrary facts be damned), then he has to explain how someone who was authentically "speaking for the people" got < 40% of the D primary vote after running for 5 years. Yeah, he wasn't "speaking for the people."

It's not merely a tactic signaling that someone speaks 4 the people. Populism is inherently divisive, often nativistic. Obama is basically an anti-populist in his political approach-A "unifier." Trump, in contrast, engages in a rhetoric of rage that pits groups against each other

Obama famously said there are no red states or blue states, only the United States. I bought a magazine in ‘08 claiming he would be the purple President. Trump is the exact opposite of that to such an extent, he thought about divesting the US of Puerto Rico.
