1. James McPherson is by training very much a top-down political and military historian, interested in the decisions of presidents & generals. But in Battle Cry of Freedom he also clearly recognizes that Civil War was bottom-up "people's war" -- makes for an interesting tension

I once hiked Gettysburg with Prof. McPherson and his approach to narrating that tour was focused on both the experience of individual soldiers and the larger strategy and tactics. At the time, I was struck by his ability to marry both in such a compelling manner

Yeah, that really comes through in the book: the combination of the bird's eye view and the common person's view. Very rare to do both well and combine them with such ease.
