Good writing, but VERY Lost Causy, although IMHO not disingenuously so, in the way of some SCV approved narratives. The only real reason to read Foote *today*, is to learn how mainstream white Southern writers in the 50s/60s saw things at the time.

It's not something to read, to learn about the Civil War. It's something to read to see how certain people thought about the Civil War, at a certain point in time.
